Meet Brian

Interfaith Spiritual Director

Brian began doing spiritual direction while he was a novice at St. Gregory’s Benedictine Abbey in Three Rivers, Michigan. Because he came to monastic life with an M.Div., he was excused from novice theology classes and the then-abbot, Benedict Read, employed Brian in a variety of activities, including listening to monastery guests who wanted some spiritual direction as part of their abbey retreat. Hence, Brian’s initiation into spiritual companionship began in a monastic atmosphere that embraced the traditional rule of St. Benedict in a contemporary and Episcopalian environment. Abbot Benedict’s insights, while grounded in Christian mystical

tradition beginning with the desert mothers and fathers, extended well beyond it. He engaged in active dialogue with those pursuing spiritual growth across America from many different traditions, with a special emphasis on Native American experience. He believed that contemporary spiritual direction must resonate with scientific discovery, highlighting all the human sciences and contemporary physics.

While still in the monastery, Brian had the opportunity to interact with Dom Bede Griffiths, Fr. BasilPennington and others who visited the abbey during his time there. He left the abbey after almost 5 years and has since lived in Chicago where he has continued spiritual direction alongside work inside the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago as a parish priest. For the past almost 40 years, Brian has continued to develop a deeper sense of his vocation in the world of spirituality, both within the church (as retreat leader and consultant) and in the private practice of spiritual direction. During those years, he has read widely in the field; attended a variety of educational programs on the intersection of psychology and spirituality (mostly through the New England Institute); and maintained regular personal retreats (mostly at St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville MN—which includes on its grounds an Episcopalian House of Prayer). He has also been fully engaged in the community, serving on several boards and working with varied organizations, including the AIDS Pastoral Care Network, DeMico Youth Services in Cabrini Green, the DeKoven Retreat and Conference Center and Care For Friends (a multi service agency for those experiencing homelessness in Chicago).

Today, Brian is largely retired from church and community commitments and emphasizes his spiritual direction practice and life with husband Roger and their dog, Dobby.

Spiritual Direction with Brian

Everyone has a soul. It is part of the structure of our being, even though it can be challenging to recognize or to value as a vital part of our human liveliness. Brian’s core approach to spiritual direction is to listen for the voice of the soul in each individual, and how that soulfulness interacts with other aspects of life in the directee’s broader experience. He believes that strengthening our capacity to attend to the soul (which is already present in every person, already vibrant and already healthy) improves our overall appreciation of life and expands our experience of it to a significantly larger and grander extent. In certain cases, this approach brings the directee relief from certain psychological or physical distress. For everyone, it opens a clearer view of the individual’s spiritual journey.

Because Brian understands that soulfulness is a universal experience and respects the individual journey of each person, he works with people from all religious and other social backgrounds and is aware that the spiritual direction process will be unique for everyone.

“It is by being awake to God in us that we can increasingly see God in the world around us. Our lives are not problems to be solved but journeys to be taken . . .”

Henri Nouwen
